The House Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee, chaired by Congressman Mike Rogers (R-AL), will hold a hearing on Friday, May 19, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. in 2118 Rayburn House Office Building on “FY2018 Priorities and Posture of the National Security Space Enterprise.”

Chairman Rogers said: “We have a growing crisis to confront in outer space, especially because of our reliance on space for national security. Our military leaders have been clear in their warnings, some going back many years, that our use of space may be taken away from us in the next military conflict.

“We should have realized this 10 years ago, when China destroyed one of its satellites in a successful test of an anti-satellite weapon. Unfortunately we have very little to show for our efforts to counter this threat over the past 10 years. We must now prioritize the national security space domain, and move with conviction and urgency to address this issue.

“We are hobbled by a hyper-fragmented organization of national security space and we have a national security space acquisition system that is constrained by a galaxy’s worth of red tape. Ranking Member Cooper and I will start to fix that this year.

“I look forward to hearing from our distinguished panel of leading national security space officials on their perspectives on the priorities and challenges in Fiscal Year 2018.”
